In the late 1800s, shuttle looms were the only looms in use. Every length of fabric produced on these looms had a tucked-in, self-finished edge — the selvedge.

At the time, it wasn’t a distinction or a speciality. It was simply the way denim was made.As industrial production evolved, wider and faster looms replaced shuttle looms, allowing denim to be produced more quickly and in greater volume.

The selvedge edge disappeared in favour of efficiency. Denim woven on shuttle looms is made slowly, in narrow widths, allowing for a tighter weave and richer texture.

Over time, it softens, adapts, and takes on a life of its own — shaped by the person who wears it.

Today, selvedge denim carries a quiet nostalgia. A connection to denim’s earliest days, when clothing was built patiently and meant to be lived in.
